MLS Photo Size: The Exact Pixels Your Board Wants (2026)

Published June 2026 · 5 min read · Real Estate

Short answer, because that's what you came for: 2048 × 1536 pixels, JPEG, under 2 MB. That combination passes every major US MLS board and every portal that syndicates from them. Now the longer answer — because the edge cases are where uploads fail at 11pm before a morning listing.

Why there's no single official number

Every MLS board sets its own photo rules, loosely following RESO (Real Estate Standards Organization) guidelines. RESO's floor is 640 × 480 — a 2005 number that survives in many board documents. In practice the portals that display your photos (Zillow, Realtor.com, Redfin) all render at 1500–2048 px wide, so the board minimum is irrelevant: target what the display needs, not what validation accepts.

Per-board file-size caps (the numbers boards actually enforce)

The MB cap is the rule that varies most between boards — and the one that fails uploads silently. Recent caps for the largest US boards:

MLS boardMax file size per photoNotes
CRMLS (California)15 MBLargest US board; 1024 px min width
Bright MLS (Mid-Atlantic)20 MBMost generous cap of the majors
Stellar MLS (Florida)10–15 MBVaries by upload path
HAR (Texas)10–15 MBCheck your association's current spec
Smaller regional boards2–5 MBThe common failure point — target these

Caps change; your board's listing-input manual is authoritative. But this is why "under 2 MB" is the universal answer — it clears every board above without checking.

The 4:3 vs 3:2 question

Most boards and portals display 4:3. Redfin is the 3:2 holdout. If you deliver 4:3, Redfin letterboxes gracefully; if you deliver 3:2, some 4:3 portals centre-crop — and centre-crops eat rooflines. So when photographers ask which single ratio to deliver: 4:3. (If you shoot 3:2 on a DSLR, crop deliberately rather than letting the portal choose what survives.)

One pass instead of three tools

The standard prep is three steps — resize, compress, strip metadata — and I watched agents do them in three different browser tabs for years. The Real Estate Photo Prep tool collapses them: pick "Generic MLS", drop the photo, download. It scales fit-inside to 2048 × 1536 (nothing cropped), lands the file just under 2 MB, and removes all EXIF including the GPS coordinates that would otherwise tag the property's exact location in every file you share. Browser-based, so pre-market photos stay on your machine.

Details that bite people

HEIC from iPhones. Many board upload forms silently fail on HEIC. Convert first — the 30-second HEIC fix covers it.

Upload order is display order. Most MLS systems show photos in upload sequence. Name files 01, 02, 03 in walk-through order before you start.

The first photo does the selling. Boards typically allow 25–50 photos; buyers decide on the first three. Lead exterior, then the money rooms — kitchen, living, primary suite.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the MLS photo size in pixels?

2048 × 1536 pixels (4:3 ratio), JPEG, under 2 MB. This satisfies effectively every US MLS board and major portal. Some boards state a 1024 × 768 minimum — always treat minimums as floors, not targets.

What aspect ratio do MLS photos use?

4:3 landscape is the standard; Redfin displays 3:2. Shoot 4:3 (or crop to it) and you avoid every portal's auto-crop.

Why does my MLS reject my photos?

Three usual causes: file over the board's MB cap, dimensions below the minimum, or HEIC/PNG format where JPEG is required. One pass through a prep tool fixes all three.

Is 1024 × 768 still acceptable for MLS?

It passes validation on most boards, but it looks soft on modern displays — portals scale photos up to fill 1500+ px carousels. Upload 2048 px wide.
