Etsy needs 2000 px+ for zoom, and search results crop listing photos toward square. This free tool fits your full photo into a 2000 × 2000 square with a white or blurred fill — nothing gets cropped off, and nothing is uploaded to any server.

Etsy is the exception in this list, and it is worth being straight about it. Etsy auto-crops your first image to a 570×456 thumbnail, which is landscape. Upload a perfect 1:1 square and Etsy trims the sides to make that thumbnail — so the edges of your composition disappear in exactly the view that decides whether anyone clicks.
Etsy's own guidance says the first photo should be landscape or square with the subject centred, precisely because of that crop. So on Etsy the useful move is not “make it square”, it is “make sure the important part survives a landscape crop”. If your product fills the frame edge to edge, squaring will cost you.
Where the square preset does help: consistency across a shop grid, and cross-listing the same photo to platforms that genuinely require 1:1. Just centre the subject with room around it, so the thumbnail crop takes background rather than product.
On resolution Etsy is the most demanding platform here — at least 2000 px on the shortest side, and 3000 px or more if you want the zoom view to hold up, since Etsy buyers zoom into texture and stitching more than buyers anywhere else. You get up to 10 images per listing, and files much over 1 MB can fail to upload on a slow connection, so compress after resizing rather than before.

White suits most Etsy shop grids and keeps the landscape thumbnail crop clean.
