The Mercari photo problem

On Mercari the first photo is doing two jobs at once. It is your thumbnail in search results — small, square, competing against a screen full of others — and it is the first thing a buyer sees when they open the listing. Get the framing wrong and you lose the sale in the grid, before anyone reads your description or sees your price.

The crop is the usual culprit. Phone cameras shoot 4:3, Mercari's grid shows squares, and the difference comes off the top and bottom of the frame. On a pair of trainers that is the sole and the laces; on a jacket it is the hem and the shoulders. Fitting the whole photo inside the square instead keeps the item recognisable at thumbnail size, which is the only size that matters for getting the click.

Mercari allows up to 12 photos per listing and sellers consistently do better using most of them — multiple angles, tags, and honest close-ups of any flaw. Resize the set in one pass here so the whole listing looks consistent rather than a mix of crops and orientations.

Keep text and stickers off the first image. Overlays that look like promotional badges read as spam in a grid and hurt the thing you are trying to help.

Why Mercari sellers use this

🔍 The thumbnail is the whole game

Your first photo is a small square in a crowded grid. Fitting the entire item inside it keeps the piece recognisable at the only size that decides the click.

🛍 No cropped hems or soles

Phones shoot 4:3, Mercari shows squares, and the difference comes off the top and bottom — exactly where the identifying details sit.

🔒 Photos stay on your phone

Runs in this browser tab. Nothing is uploaded, and EXIF location data does not travel with the file.

⚡ Up to 12 photos, one pass

Mercari allows 12 and sellers do better using most of them. Square the set together so the listing reads as one coherent shoot.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best photo size for Mercari?
Mercari displays listing photos as squares — 1080 × 1080 pixels is the sweet spot: sharp on retina screens without slowing uploads. This tool's Mercari preset applies it automatically.
How do I make my photo square for Mercari without cropping?
Upload the photo, keep the Mercari preset selected, and click Square & Download. The full photo is scaled to fit inside a 1080 × 1080 square and the empty space is filled with white or a blur — nothing is cropped.
Should I use white background or blur?
White looks clean and professional and is the marketplace standard for product shots. Blurred-edge fill looks more native for lifestyle/fashion shots. Try both — it's one click each.
Will the quality drop?
No visible loss — the output is JPEG at 92% quality, higher than what the platforms themselves re-compress to on upload.
Why does Mercari use 1080×1080 square photos?
Mercari displays listing photos as squares in search results. 1080×1080 px is the recommended resolution for Mercari — it fills the listing card without upscaling and stays sharp when buyers expand the image. Non-square photos are auto-cropped by Mercari, which may cut off parts of the item.
Is this really free with no watermark?
Yes. No account, no watermark, no limits. The tool runs in your browser so there are no server costs behind it.
